The Bloomington Writers Festival and Book Fair is currently taking applications from published authors for table space at the 12th annual event, March 28, 2015 at the Bloomington Center for the Arts, 1800 W Old Shakopee, Bloomington, MN. The Book Fair hours are 10:30am – 4:00pm. Space is limited and is assigned on a first come, first served basis. The necessary form for this event is attached for your convenience or you may go to www.btacmn.org to download the form. Registration applications are due January 15, 2015.
This year’s Keynote Speaker is Jeff Shotts, Executive Editor of Graywolf Press, an award-winning publisher whose authors have won the Nobel Prize for Literature, National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. This small, not-for-profit publisher is highly successful in a very difficult, highly competitive book market.
Workshops, author readings and companies who provide services to authors will also be available as resources for all who attend. Caver County Library System is writer-friendly. A writer’s group including all genres has been active for 5 years now at Chanhassen Library, 7711 Kerber BLvd. It meets the third Saturday of every month from 10:00-noon. Fourth Saturdays from 1-3:30pm the Author’s Collective meets in the building for information about contracts, self-publishing, letters of inquiry and marketing. Waconia Branch hosts Writer’s Club on the first Saturday of every month at 10:30am. A champion for the writers colony is Angela Hunt, CCLS Librarian who organizes events. October 7 the 4th annual Open Mike Poetry event took place with live music to start and 45 poems read by audience members who brought favorite classics and original work. “The night was heartwarming”, Beth Hammers, local poet, summed up.
A Memoir Writer’s Group was started this fall (Last Wednesday of the month) after an all-day Writer’s Retreat for Memoir at Charlson Meadows by guest speaker Judy Budreau. Angela is heading up the new Chaska Area Poetry Writer’s Group which meets quarterly on the last Wednesday of the month (January 28, 2015 next meeting). There are also live reading events planned nearly monthly for all genres in local coffee houses. Angela says she is busy planning the 3rd Annual Writer’s Fair which is hosted at Chanhassen Library. This year it will be held on Sat, April 11, 2015. “We’ll hear Tom Kerber, CEO of Beaver’s Pond Press, talk about how to prepare a manuscript for submission, mystery and non-fiction writer Jan Dunlap will speak on “Switching Genres Successfully” and “Managing Writer Workload”, and there will be other notable speakers including Laurel Means, Editor-in-Chief of Prairie Editing Services, who will be doing free 15-min one-on-one editing sessions.
